Tips - Removing Your Seat |
|
|
Most of you Fiddie wiz kids are already privy to this kind
of knowledge, but we get all kinds on this website, and many of them are
beginners and can benefit from a helpful hint or two. Here is a great tip for
gaining access to your engine, and especially the carburetor area. When playing
with your throttle cable, the only thing left beyond this is turning off the
gas, pulling off the gas line, and taking off the front and back bolt and
removing your gas tank. But I digress, we are taking off the seat here.
The seat is a combination unit that is connected to the
tank shrouds, and the rear fender also. When you remove your seat, you will also
remove these parts. Since you're taking off three items, you need to deal with
three areas.

Area 1 is the front of the tank shrouds. You will need to
remove the two plastic push-lock fasteners. To get them out you need to put a
screwdriver underneath the "head" and pry it up. When it is pried up, it will
pull a knob up with it that will allow the bottom to be squeezed smaller, and
you can remove the whole push lock fastener by lifting it upwards.

Area 2 is the shroud at the side of the tank. You need to
unscrew a Phillips head screw from both sides. Now be careful with these, really
lean into your screwdriver to keep from stripping out the Phillips head. Once
that's stripped you'll need to resort to an easy out or a cold chisel. Take your
time and snap loose these really tight screws.

Area 3 is underneath the seat. These are the two easiest
screws of the whole process. You put your 10mm socket wrench on these and turn
them out. Done!

This is the bike with the seat-shroud-rear fender combo
removed. You do it once, and you'll do it many times because it opens up the
carburetor area so much.

Shown with and without the seat unit, and everything is
wide open.
